Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is a global business district undergoing a powerful renaissance. Long one of the world’s leading financial centres, it is now diversifying rapidly. Visa, UCL and Deutsche Bank have recently joined established tenants including JPMorgan Chase. New employment uses under construction, such as Europe’s largest life sciences laboratory at North Quay, are broadening the jobs base into health, science and technology.
New amenities, cultural venues and waterside public spaces are drawing people to visit and stay. Neighbourhoods like Wood Wharf are delivering over 3,500 new homes and creating thriving residential communities.
The opportunity
There is a strong pipeline of early-stage opportunities across all growth sectors: thousands of new homes, new workspace for health research and technology, and significant further office capacity. Opportunities include new development on allocated and unallocated sites, alongside retrofit and modernisation of existing buildings.
How we will work with partners
The council already works closely with Canary Wharf Group, with a dedicated planning officer supporting development in the area. We will coordinate opportunities here with development in neighbouring areas to create greater cohesion, and we will fully support tall buildings where they deliver clear local benefits.
We want to strengthen connections between Canary Wharf and surrounding neighbourhoods, create high-skilled jobs for local people, ensure high-quality design, and unlock new public space.
