Shoreditch and Aldgate

Shoreditch and Aldgate is the creative, digital and commercial heart of London. From its iconic street art and food scene to rapidly growing businesses like Improbable and Memrise, this is a place with the attention of the world. The area’s business community is anchored by global HQs like BT and the active Aldgate Connect BID.

The pace of change here over the last three decades is matched by few areas in London. Following post-war periods of decline, creatives and tech start-ups took up space and transformed the area into what it is today.

The opportunity

There are significant opportunities for new mixed-use development through retrofit, densification and land use optimisation. The central location also creates unique potential for tall buildings. The economic hub of the City is growing increasingly eastward into Tower Hamlets. Opportunities include two allocated mixed-use sites, alongside further potential on unallocated sites in the City Fringe.

How we will work with partners

The council will coordinate with surrounding boroughs to ensure aligned development and infrastructure across boundaries. We will support commercial-led and residential-led developments where they contribute positively to the area’s creative identity. We will work with partners to ensure new development retains space for diverse uses, protects key anchor institutions like London Metropolitan University, and creates new affordable workspace for SMEs and creative industry.

The City is growing eastwards. If you want to be part of that, get in touch.
