Spitalfields, Brick Lane and Shoreditch
Start your walk at Old Spitalfields Market, one of East London’s best known market spaces and a good introduction to the area’s mix of old and new. The covered market is filled with independent food stalls, fashion traders, cafés and small shops, and the surrounding streets are always busy with people heading between the City and Shoreditch.
Leave the market and walk north towards Brick Lane, passing through streets where Victorian buildings sit beside modern cafés, galleries and creative studios. As you approach Brick Lane, the atmosphere changes quickly. The streets become louder, more colourful and full of the energy that has made this part of East London famous around the world.
Brick Lane is known for vintage shops, curry houses, bakeries, cafés and constantly changing street art. As you walk north, keep looking up and down the side streets. Some of the area’s best murals are hidden just off the main road on Hanbury Street, Fashion Street and Fournier Street.
One of the best things about this walk is that no two visits are ever the same. Walls are regularly repainted, new artists appear overnight, and entire corners can change within weeks. You’ll spot everything from giant murals and posters to smaller hidden pieces tucked beside doorways and shop shutters.
Take time to explore the Old Truman Brewery courtyard, where markets, pop up shops and food stalls spill out into the surrounding streets. On weekends, the area becomes especially lively, with vintage clothing stalls, vinyl record sellers and street food traders drawing crowds from across London.
As you continue into Shoreditch, the streets become even more creative and fast moving. Look out for famous street art spots around Redchurch Street, Rivington Street and Great Eastern Street. You’ll pass converted warehouses, independent coffee shops and some of East London’s best known creative spaces.
BOXPARK Shoreditch is a good place to stop for food or coffee, built from stacked shipping containers and surrounded by busy bars and street life.
If you want a quieter break from the crowds, wander through the side streets around Arnold Circus and the Boundary Estate, one of the world’s earliest social housing developments. The area feels calmer but still full of character, with cafés, pubs and hidden gardens tucked between the streets.
As evening approaches, the neighbourhood changes again. Restaurants, bars and music venues begin to fill, neon signs light up the streets and Shoreditch takes on the nightlife atmosphere it’s famous for.
This is one of the best walks in London for people watching, photography and discovering something unexpected around every corner. Go slowly, explore the side streets and don’t be afraid to get slightly lost, that’s usually where the best parts of Brick Lane and Shoreditch are found.
